When you hear the reference PUERTO RICAN, most would assume you were speaking about a spanish person. However, after watching this video, you will probably never refer to a Puerto Rican as Spanish again. If history doesn’t lie, then the truth about Puerto Rico is far from Spain. Many of the caribbean islands like Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Cuba are grouped into the “SPANISH” culture, because of the language they speak. Most will even refer to themselves as a Spanish person. The problem with that is explained in this descriptive video about island culture and it’s history. Much like the British who came into the United States and brought African slaves, who refer to themselves now as African-Americans, the Spanish came to these islands and brought African slaves also. They conquered and raped the indian culture that was originally from Puerto Rico, and brought thousands of Africans to the island. When they were done with their business on the island, the Spanish Conquistadors, left. They left a product of their reign of terror. The reason Puerto Ricans speak spanish, is because their slave masters did, the reason they are light skinned, is because they are a product of their slave masters mixing with the Indian and African culture.
Thanks to this video (below), more people can understand what it means to be a Puerto Rican, and will hopefully identify the culture for what it truly stands for. There are African Americans in this world, and by the similar journeys, there are also, Afro-Latinos. Puerto Ricans have their own history, and it’s not as simple as you may think. This video should inspire us all to dig a bit deeper and uncover who we really are, and what cultures made us that way.
WE ALL HAVE A STORY TO TELL.
