I have talked about gimmicks in the past referring to the Hip Hop industry, and a new one is taking center stage, AND SELLING OUT. Iggy Azalea, is the ultimate “product” of Suburbian Hip Hop. Her image is genius, and her label representation is to be respected in the industry.
Iggy Azalea can rap on a record that has recorded multiple vocal tracks and been edited and mixed by the best engineers. Even her live performances are believable with the live sound and background vocals leading the way. However, there is one problem. What happens when the music goes off and it is just you with the mic? If you are a true rapper who has created your own style, then I would think after performing it hundreds of times, you would be able to do it flawlessly. Unfortunately, Iggy fell short of proving her “realness” when she lost the background vocals on Dancing With the Stars.
When the music starts she is the product “Iggy Azalea”, and when it turns off, she is just a white girl trying to imitate rapping. She can’t seem to catch the beat or rhythm to go back into the song, and her fake southern accent is apparent. Though I may not believe in her Hip Hop sound and understand it to be only a gimmick, I can’t help but give her and her camp props for executing a vision a making it to number one. I would appreciate, however, if when referring to Iggy’s category, we file her under Pop.
