There have been a few attempts to build a comic book franchise around actor Ryan Reynolds, and Universal’s adaptation of R.I.P.D. may have finally pulled it off. The Green Lantern and X-Men Origins: Wolverine actor told The Playlist that the movie, which just finished shooting, could be set up for a sequel.
I’m hoping to be able to work with all those people again. It could be a franchise. It certainly is set up, plot-wise, for a sequel. But nobody’s signed on for that just yet. We would like it to be [a series.]
Based on the Dark Horse comic book by writer Peter Lenkov and artist Lucas Marangon, R.I.P.D. stars Reynolds as the late police detective Nick Walker, a murder victim who is recruited for the Rest in Peace Department, as long as he is allowed to hunt down his murderer. How a sequel is set up is unknown, especially to fans of the source material. “It’s not really even a full comic book series,” Reynolds admitted. “It’s just the one comic, the graphic novel.”
The fact that Reynolds is hoping to reunite with his R.I.P.D. cast is no surprise, considering that Jeff Bridges plays Reynolds’ 1800s-era gunslinger partner, Kevin Bacon plays the movie’s antagonist, and the rest of the cast includes stars like Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds), Stephanie Szostak (Dinner for Schmucks), and Mike O’Malley (Glee). Reynolds was the first actor attached to the project back in early 2010, and was glad to stick with it, despite a developing Deadpool spin-off at one point threatening to force Reynolds to choose between projects.
“Being on set was incredible, because it’s a movie project that I’ve been with for years, and believed in,” said Reynolds of R.I.P.D.. “Being able to stick with it is half the battle.”
The other half is seeing if R.I.P.D. becomes a success when it opens in 2013. Robert Schwentke (RED) directed from a script by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay (Clash of the Titans remake).
